Check out the pregnancy-related word list.
Those are the words you are about to come into contact with as soon as you suspect that you might be pregnant. It might be in the first articles you read or in the literature your midwife is about to give you.
Your dutch midwife is the go-to person as soon as you suspect that you might be later than normal with your period or you are actively trying and believe to be successful at conceiving a baby.
Your GP office can recommend midwife practices (verloskundigenpraktijk)near you and you can pick where to register to follow up on your pregnancy. The midwife (verloskundige) is the person who will confirm your pregnancy, order tests for you, measure your baby, and help you out with all the questions you might have. She will also be the one who delivers your baby.
The more you understand, the less scared you will be. It might be your first baby or just the first time you give birth in the Netherlands. No need to add to the stress of birth itself the language barrier. Keep on practicing the words and soon you will feel confident that whatever you read is familiar and you will not feel lost. In my case, it is a third baby, so I know what comes next biology-wise, but I am in desperate need to easily understand what the people around me are saying and it will be even more important when the time comes to actually deliver the baby.
Practice with this video on your own. Did you get most of it? What word did you not understand and prevented you from getting the meaning? Share in the comments below! See you in week 2.
