“Nu komt de aap uit de mouw” – The Cat’s Out of the Bag, Dutch Style!

Posted on July 24, 2024August 7, 2024 by Self Study Dutch

Have you ever been dying to know someone’s secret? Or maybe you’ve let a secret slip yourself, revealing something surprising or unexpected?

The Dutch have a fun and quirky idiom for these situations: “Nu komt de aap uit de mouw.”

Literally translated, it means “Now the monkey comes out of the sleeve.” While it might sound strange to picture a monkey hiding in someone’s clothing, this idiom is all about revealing hidden truths.

Origins and Meaning

The origins of this idiom are uncertain, but it’s thought to date back to the 16th century. Street performers often used monkeys in their acts, hiding them under their clothes or in bags for a dramatic reveal.

Just like the surprise of the monkey appearing, “Nu komt de aap uit de mouw” is used when:

  • A secret is revealed: “Toen hij per ongeluk zijn cadeau liet zien, kwam de aap uit de mouw – het was een nieuwe fiets!” (When he accidentally revealed his present, the cat was out of the bag – it was a new bike!)
  • The truth is exposed: “Na weken van geruchten kwam de aap eindelijk uit de mouw – het bedrijf ging failliet.” After weeks of rumors, the penny finally dropped – the company went bankrupt.

Using the Idiom

“Nu komt de aap uit de mouw” is a common and lighthearted expression in Dutch. You can use it in both spoken and written language to add a touch of humor to situations where secrets are spilled or the truth is unveiled.

So, next time you’re talking about a surprising revelation, remember the Dutch monkey hiding up its sleeve!
