Carnaval Frenzy in Limburg

Posted on February 15, 2023February 15, 2023 by Self Study Dutch

Just as the Christmas and new year holidays have passed and it seems like life is returning to a boring routine, everything changes in the Netherlands. Yes, it is Carnaval time again and the whole of Limburg turns green, yellow, and red.

We had just arrived last year and I couldn’t fully grasp what the whole thing was about. We were told to get costumes and get ready for a fun week. To me, that meant getting stuff in the obvious colors of the carnival – things like hats scarves, and bows. Boy was I wrong. We decided to go to a Kleutersbal (a party in the middle of the day in the local public house specially made for little kids) because our little one has just turned three and it seemed like a good introduction.

It turned out that the entire village came wearing full-on costumes and makeup. Even babies were dressed up as bees and princesses. It felt like we were at a giant kids’ birthday party. Of course, we stood out from the crowd and everybody knew we were new there.

It was just after the Corona lockdown and the Netherlands was opening pretty cautiously. Everybody seemed eager to get finally out and have fun. We were told that the festivities we saw are somewhat limited compared to the usual because of the virus. Yet it seemed like so much fun I swore to myself – next year we also go all in.

All in for me means digging deep into reading about the traditions that lead to it, listening to the music, and of course – dressing up. Of course, it is also a great way to improve on vocabulary and learn some more dutch.

What is canaval?

When is carnaval? / Wanneer is carnaval?
