Everyday Things You Say to Your Kids at Breakfast in Dutch

Posted on February 5, 2022February 6, 2022 by Self Study Dutch

Even if you want to postpone talking to your kids in dutch there comes a time you will need to. It will help them learn and it will help you learn. They will learn to understand other people in the kindergarten and school and you will also learn how to talk to other kids on the playground. Keep it simple is my best advice and the one I go by every day. At first, I did not want to teach them anything wrong but a few months later I saw they need those words and they do not care if you say it wrong. They need to understand what is going on around them when they talk to other people. It is better for them to learn something not quite right than to feel all they hear is unintelligible gibberish. So here are some things I usually say to my 3-year-old and my 11-year-old when they wake up.

Did you sleep well
Heb je good geslapen

Did you have a bad dream
Had je een nare droom

Did you dream of somehting nice
Heb je over iets leuks gedroomd

Are you hungry
Heb je honger?

What do you want for breakfast?
Wat wil je voor ontbijt

Take a cup / bowl / plate
Neem een kop / kom / bord

What are you looking for
Waar ben je naar op zoek

Do you want more
Wil je meer

I want more juice
Ik wil meer sap

All the knives / forks /spoons are in the dishwasher
Alle messen / vorken / lepels zitten in de vaatwasser.

Use this
Gebruik dit

Take a bite
Neep een hap

That was a small bite
Dat was een klein hapje

Take a bigger bite
Neem een grotere hap.

take a handkerchief
Neem een zakdoek

Do you need help
Heb je hulp nodig

do not spil
spil niet

Be careful
Wees voorzichtig.

Watch out
Pas op

Eat slowly please
Eet langzaam alsjeblieft

Are you going to eat that?
Ga je dat opeten?

No toys on the table
Geen speelgoed op de tafel

Do not play with your food
Speel niet met je eten.

Do you need help?
Heb je hulp nodig?

That is fun
Dat is leuk.

Do not scream
schreeuw niet

No screaming
Geen geschreeuw

Do not throw food
Gooi geen voedsel

It fell on the ground, now the dog will eat it
Het viel op de grond, nu zal de hond het opeten

Practice those expressions in dutch with flash cards

As you can see our mornings are not like those on Hallmark movies but they are our own and those are a part of the things we say to each other. I encourage you to write down all the things you say and send them to me. I will include those in a future edit of the post or in a new post.
